Count the steps you can stand on. Leave out the landing at the top.

Pick the carpet
Pick the edging
A cotton border of about 6 to 7 cm each side, in one of six colours. Or a wool whipped edge in the carpet's own colour.
Pick the landing
Landing carpet is cut to size and fitted wall to wall, with no border.
Pick the stair rods
10 mm rods, one per step. Rods can be shortened with a hacksaw.
Add a matching rug?
Same carpet, with a Black cotton border to match your runner.
